WILCO w/ LORD HURON
@ BUDWEISER STAGE, TORONTO
OCTOBER 8, 2019
Wilco kicked off their North American tour tonight with a visit to Toronto’s Budweiser Stage to celebrate their latest release Ode to Joy.
The evening started with Ode to Joy’s “Bright Leaves” and “Before Us”, jumping right into “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” and “War on War” from their masterpiece Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, as the band did their best to represent each of their albums, the songs from their latest release had no problem fitting into the set-list.
Although the band has been touring Europe for the past month promoting the release of “Ode To Joy”, that didn’t mean the band didn’t have some surprises up their sleeve, including the live debut of “We Were Lucky”, “Random Name Generator”, “How To Fight Loneliness”, and “Misunderstood” which had some of the loudest responses of the evening.
Relatively quiet most of the evening and focusing more on the music, Jeff Tweedy did address the audience with some love and humour. “I’m fond of you!” “This is another smash hit song, sing along won’t you?”, while introducing “Heavy Metal Drummer”
It may have taken a bit for the seated audience to get up. But by the end of the evening we were all moving and giving an ode to joy.
