SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE FREE LABEL – THIS SOME KIND OF LOVE

The Free Label

The Free Label
This Some Kind Of Love
Independent

The Free Label is five piece band, based in Toronto. This Some Kind Of Love is their debut EP and although it contains only three songs, it does demonstrate a band on their way to creating their own niche. The group consists of Josh Daniel (vocals), Matthew Fantini (bass), Malik Mungo (guitar), Daniel-leigh Mclean (drums) and Cole Mendez (keyboards).

They are clearly influenced by rhythm and blues, past and present, and yet they have started to create their style within that genre. The band is tight, which would suggest they have learned a great deal from numerous live gigs over the past year or so, and Josh Daniel has the perfect voice for the music.

The intention here is to get you moving and grooving and on that account they succeed. The songs are for your pleasure, to be played at a maximum volume at party or a great summer outdoors gathering. But the key to the music is to have fun and celebrate life. Again, they succeed. This is hot rhythm and blues and dance music, not techno, but dance music. In many regards they tap into the past and make it current.

As this is only a three song EP, it would be interesting to see what they can do with an entire album of material. I think they will succeed and I look forward to more music from this talented band.

About the Author
Aaron Badgley
Born and raised in Whitby, Aaron discovered music through his love of The Beatles. This led to a career in radio, writing for various publications, and ultimately a radio show about The Beatles (Beatles Universe), which ran for over four years. When not immersed in music, Aaron enjoys spending time with the loves of his life -- his wife Andrea, and daughters Emily and Linda (all of whom have an intense love of music too).
