SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SOCIAL GRAVY – A DIFFERENT KIND

Social Gravy

Social Gravy
A Different Kind
Independent

If you have any grievances with quality pop/rock akin to Coldplay or say, even Dawes, you may freely skip this review. You see, Belarusian musician Vee Bordukov & British producer/songwriter Brad Kohn, aka Social Gravy, make exactly that kind of music on their second EP “A Different Kind.” The LA-based duo obviously aims for such a sound, and they have absolutely no reason to be ashamed of it, because they are able to come up with some quality rocking pop. Whether it is the more relaxed songs like “Happening”, Love You Better”, and  “A Different Kind”, or the more rocking “Anywayz”, the duo is able to keep itself within the constraints of a pop song formula without sticking to any worn-out cliches, letting their knack for melody and excellent production shine. After all, making a quality pop song that ticks all the right boxes is one of the hardest things to do in modern music.

Earth shattering? Maybe not, but then in the times when other things and events can certainly carry that label, Social Gravy might be exactly the antidote we need.
