NOBRO
SET YOUR PUSSY FREE
DINE ALONE RECORDS
Acclaimed Montreal punk outfit NOBRO have returned with their second full length album, Set Your Pussy Free. Follow the release of their debut, 2022’s Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar, and, more recently, a pair of singles – “Let’s Do Drugs” and “Where My Girls At” – Set Your Pussy Free is an explosively fun follow up to their impressive debut.
Almost a call to arms – certainly a call to emancipating action – NOBRO open their record with an onslaught of distortion. The title track is a simple, catchy, and energetic track that is bound to be a hit live. The song hits a point of climax during the build-up that leads into the guitar solo before the song comes to a close. “Set Your Pussy Free” lives up to its role as a title track that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The following song, the lead single, “Let’s Do Drugs” is a grimy song led by chugging power chords and accented by a reoccurring gang vocal motif that, ultimately is as fun of a drug anthem since Queens Of The Stone Age released “Feel Good Hit Of The Summer”.
Throughout the course of its eleven tracks, NOBRO have delivered an album without a moment of weakness. With each song sounding as though it could be a single, there are a definite set of highlights which stand above this collection of music. The laid back and rhythmic riff of “Cash In On My Cachet” feels effortless and the fuzzed out psychedelia of “Nobody Knows” are simply fantastic. Additionally, the slightly darker tone of “Who The Hell Am I” feels reminiscent of The Stooges while demonstrating how the band, even when performing in a classic punk fashion, sound fresh and innovative. Without a doubt, NOBRO knows how to keep the good times rolling.
With its longest song clocking in at three minutes and twenty seconds, NOBRO revels in the punk tradition of leaving you wanting more. Set Your Pussy Free, while not an exception to this – the album ends sooner than you’d like – is a refreshing take on modern and alternative punk. Prioritizing an insatiably fun vibe, NOBRO has captured the nihilism and existentialism that feels inseparable from millennial culture in a world that is on fire. There is something about the songwriting and lyrics on Set Your Pussy Free that feels so relevant to today. Through this, in conjunction with music that defies expectations for both punk and alternative rock, NOBRO has demonstrated their relevance as one of the most promising up and coming punk bands on their sophomore release, Set Your Pussy Free.
