SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: NOBRO – LIVE YOUR TRUTH SHRED SOME GNAR

NOBRO

NOBRO
Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar
Dine Alone Records

Montreal punk outfit, NOBRO has returned with its sophomore EP, Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar. The seven-track record is the band’s follow-up to their 2020 EP, Sick Hustle, while following a series of singles throughout the last year, leading up to their current release.

Opening with a gospel-inspired aspiration, NOBRO open Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar before the vintage punk vibes of “Better Each Day” truly kick into gear. Setting the tone for the rest of the album, “Better Each Day” sounds like the result of The Runaways and The Ramones sharing a studio together in the early ‘70s. The fun, high octane track gleans on modern punk with its lo-fi production and pop sensibilities, but, overall, stands out for its classic musical aesthetic. “Better Each Day” is immediately followed by one of the strongest songs on the EP. “Julia” is a moody and groovy explosion of youthful energy and misadventure and is perhaps the most unique of the seven songs on Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar.

Throughout the seven tracks, NOBRO has delivered a strong record without a moment of filler. With the bar raised so high, a few tracks stand beside “Julia” as definite highlights. The first comes in the form of the explosive punk banger, “Eat Slay Chardonnay”, a refreshingly fun track that has the qualities of pure, unadulterated punk from the ‘70s. Additionally, the largely acoustic closer, “Life Is A Voyage” adds an alternative sense of psychedelia to the band’s performance cementing the idea that a NOBRO jam is a good time, no matter what they’re playing.

Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar is a classic punk odyssey that feels truly fresh and exciting. At the forefront, the EP is a genuinely fun album to listen to, which only adds to the vintage vibe that NOBRO has tastefully curated. Without a weak song on the record, NOBRO has set the stage and raised the expectations; whatever is to come next is sure to be, at the very least, equally as exciting as Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar.
