SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: MOON DUO – STARS ARE THE LIGHT

Moon Duo

Moon Duo
Stars Are The Light
Sacred Bones

Moon Duo’s new record Stars Are The Light is a new direction for one of the more talked about psychedelic rock outfits.

Coming off the well-received Occult Architecture releases, the new direction I would say here is in the direction of dance/disco, and it is a satisfying listen.  That could scare fans of Moon Duo as the Occult Architecture releases moved from more aggressive and psychedelic-oriented to a smoother sound.

The title track is a hypnotic dance number that just makes you want to bob your head. Personally, I feel the standout track here is “Lost Heads”. It is creative to the max with almost a Toro Y Moi feel.

The production quality here is also superb. One can really dig the guitar without missing the drums and effects. It is almost a form of meditation without too much focus on just one effect or sound. “Eternal Shore” leans a bit heavily on Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five”, but this does not mean it is a skip by any means. Lastly, “Eye 2 Eye” is a steady, pulsing, dancing, almost rock ‘n’roll straight up “let’s go” song.

People who are looking for a change of pace, where they can open their ears a bit and stretch out those tired legs, will enjoy this record.
