MF Tomlinson
We Are Still Wild Horses
PRAH Recordings
Working within the psych rock and psych folk genres these days means that as an artist you actually have to digest as many other genres as possible you can and include them within either (or both).
For many artists that is a complicated thing and can turn sour, but when they succeed, you can get some intricate music that at the same time sounds familiar and excitingly fresh.
Whatever the Australian-born London-based singer songwriter MF Tomlinson did on his debut album Strange Time might or might not have a connection with his latest release, We Are Still Wild Horses. Yet the four tracks, which we can freely call compositions, turn out to be extremely intricate and detailed, and include so many elements from practically anywhere. Yet they still having that psych rock/folk thread running through them, making all those seemingly disparate elements present themselves as if they always belonged together.
And MF Tomlinson actually doesn’t at any point complicate his music and lyrics, presenting his ideas in exactly the manner that they should be presented. It is so early in the year, but this one should be included when the best of the year lists time comes around.
