LOVELORN DOLLS
DEADTIME STORIES
ALFA MATRIX
Lovelorn Dolls’ Deadtime Stories is… a little scary! It delivers a fairy tale fantasy, and like all fairy tales, it is marginally frightening. Rest assured, we all know that in the end, good will triumph. Still, for Lovelorn Dolls, we cannot be sure as their story continues. Duo Kristell Lowagie and Bernard Daubresse embody their unique brand and artistic vision. Their ability to seamlessly blend their distinct aesthetic with profound and weighty themes is remarkable.
Exploring the album, I discover new and intricate nuances that make Deadtime Stories unique. It is a testament to Lovelorn Dolls’ talent and creativity that their music can grow on the listener, leaving a lasting impression and a desire for more.
Deadtime Stories delivers 12 tracks, complete with an intro and outro, that cleverly incorporate the storytelling theme—it’s fantastic. “Once Upon A Time” warns of wonderful nightmares, and the narrator is subtly creepy. The track quickly rolls into “A Heart Cries,” an empowering track that I rate as a favourite.
Each track is beautifully constructed, with the synthetic gothic chic Lovelorn Dolls is known for, with a subtle, striking twist of 80s fantasy thread gently within some of the instrumentals. VVITCHBOY, American gothic rap, is featured on “Death & Glory”, which is a phenomenal choice; his vocals bounce effortlessly off Lowagie’s magically charismatic melody. It’s a sick track. Who knew gothic rap? Of course, “Beautiful Chaos” is a striking track with its sweet rolling introduction, threatening lyrics, and escalating instrumental force.
With each listen, their album becomes even more captivating and enjoyable. The layers of depth and intricacy within the music reveal themselves gradually, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the emotional journey that Lovelorn Dolls has crafted through Deadtime Stories. The duo’s attention to detail and dedication to their craft are evident in every aspect of their music, from the haunting melodies to the thought-provoking lyrics. This meticulous craftsmanship allows Lovelorn Dolls to create a cohesive and compelling experience for their audience.
