Maine’s Katherine Perkins is not the first and surely will not be the last singer and songwriter who is also a painter. In most cases, one artistic side takes a dominance over the other, but with Perkins there seems to be quite a balance there, as on the evidence of her second solo album Helpless Love (she did also record two albums with Rose Hips & Ships) the ability to create audible images is spilling easily into her music.

And while her lyrics here focus on instinctive, often mysterious things beyond human control, the music she creates is quite down to earth, with flashes of folk legends like Karen Dalton, rock great that is Lucinda Williams, but also R&B touches that permeate the music of Bonnie Raitt.
While on paper that just might sound as a tricky combination, Perkins is able to pull it of with quite some ease, as if it al is coming so natural to her.
