How many songs on a release do you need to realize that an artist is doing the right thing?

For some, a double album is not enough, for others, like Julie Byrne, who are brimming with talent and inventiveness four songs on an EP like her most recent Julie Byrne With Laugh Cry Laugh is quite enough.

Byrne already had an album this year, The Greater Wings, that can easily fit on any ‘Best of the Year’ list, but this most recent collaboration with Laugh Cry Laugh is not only a great companion to that album, but shows all the brilliant qualities Byrne has already exhibited – excellent songwriting, a beautiful voice, and a penchant for arrangements to match, whether it is the three new songs here, or the cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days,” to which Byrne is able to add just another atmospheric layer. Outstanding.
