SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JULESY – FLIP THE BED

Julesy

JULESY
FLIP THE BED
STRONG PLACE MUSIC

Finding your own place in music circles isn’t easy these days, even for fully accomplished artists, let alone those that are practically starting out, particularly if they are coming up with a debut release, like a debut album. The key there is coming up with something completely new or something that you are sure will catch the ear of a wider audience.

Yet could you make it with just good music that strikes a good chord with somebody out there? That is exactly what Brooklyn singer songwriter Julesy seems to be trying to do with her debut album Flip the Bed. Julesy is not experimenting here, but she is neither abiding by any strict formulas that seem to be pleasing the wider audiences these days – she is simply picking up pop rock elements she likes, by knowledge, or feel or inventiveness, or all of those, and assembling them to convey something quite personal that just might relate to somebody out there.

And she is doing it quite effectively here, without faking or breaking it, coming up with some excellent modern pop along the way.
