SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JENN VIX – 6

Jenn Vix

Jenn Vix
6
Umbrella Music Co.

6 is a six-track EP as well as Jenn Vix’s sixth release (hence the title). Vix released an EP last year, Unlocked, and has returned with this inspired mini album, full of excellent songs. It is self-produced and features Jenn Vix ( guitar, synths, vocals, electronic drums, recording), Paul LF (bass guitar) and David Barbarossa (drums). Vix writes the songs as well.

“Let’s go for a ride in my car” is the opening line in the song “Ride” which opens the EP. It is perfect in setting the tone for what is to follow. Six well-produced songs that are perfect for those late night summer drives, with the windows down, with nowhere in particular to go.  The music is steeped in 1980’s electronic rock, but has the 2019 edge to it. It made me feel young again.

Perhaps that is the overall theme of the mini album, the ability to revisit times in your life, either through emotions or experiences. The newness of a relationship, the travel, the journey, all of it as if one experiences it for the first time. The urgency one feels is spread throughout, musically and lyrically. “The heat between us could melt our eyes” she sings in “In Your Sleep”. “But we won’t see the sunrise” she counters.

It is the excitement of the music that is very enticing. Vix is able to draw the listener in and keeps them as passengers until the last song is finished. She has a flair for imaginative melodies. A lot of them stick in your head after one play. The last track, “Valentine”, for example is an instrumental but so full of life and excitement that it leaves you wanting more. The vocals are not missed. It is a brilliant way to end the album.

Vix’s vocals are in fine form throughout. She has her own distinct sound and style and it is perfect for the music. She has a beautiful range and uses her voice like she would an instrument. It flows and can pack a punch when needed. This is an artist who knows herself well, and pushes herself to always reach her potential.

6 is a brilliant EP and as such, does not overstay its welcome. In fact, it is a shame it was not extended to a full album.
