Flesh Eating Foundation
We Are Fucked
Sonic Entrails Records
Flesh Eating Foundation have been recording since 2008, and since then they have amassed quite a catalogue. We Are Fucked is their seventh album, and their best yet. The band consists of John E. Smoke (vocals and noises), who is one of the few visually and hearing impaired singers in music. Also in the band is The Juddaman (writing, voices and noises), and Jules (axes and shouts). The band is joined by Mash and Big Un on guitars. The band wrote, recorded, mixed and produced the album in their own home studio. This is grassroots at its finest.
Flesh Eating Foundation are clearly independent and in being so, are pretty free to express themselves. Fans of the band will know what to expect with this album. This is hard driving electro punk music. From the opening chords to the end of the album, Flesh Eating Foundation grab the listener and do not let go. The album opens with the title track, βWe Are Fuckedβ and ends with a remix of the same song. This sets the tone. Heavy synth sounds, vocals more yelling than singing convey an overall sense of intense anger. Flesh Eating Foundation may be ten years older, but they are not showing signs of slowing down or being any less angry.
The band has asked for other performers and DJs to remix some of the songs, and the album concludes with three mixes of βWe Are Fuckedβ and two mixes of βHaving Funβ. Normally, remixes are added on to the album for marketing purposes. But here, the mixes are part of the album. Not only do they give fresh spins on the songs, they add to the material in a very positive way.
We Are Fucked is not album of electronic noise. Everything they do has a purpose. It may sound chaotic, but the album is well orchestrated and constructed. One cannot help but think that the band want people to have something to think about as they throw themselves about the dance floor. In this regard they succeed. There is a lot to be angry about in the world today, and Flesh Eating Foundation are not afraid to wade in with their views and opinions. The music matches.
Label mate, Adam Probert, provides vocals on the song βFuturelastβ, which adds a different dimension to the album, and Probertβs vocals are strong and loud by anyoneβs standards.
This is a great album, full of angry electronic music. There is a sameness throughout the album, as one might expect. And this is not for everybodyβs taste. Most will find the remixes somewhat more accessible, but overall they deliver on their promise. With a title like We Are Fucked, one can expect anger, yelling and hardcore electronica.
