FAYE WEBSTER
UNDERDRESSED AT THE SYPHONY
SECRETLY CANADIAN
If you are yet to indulge into the joys of Faye Webster’s music, you have been missing quite a bit since her self-titled album back in 2017. Now, with her latest,Β Underdressed at the Symphony, Webster is reaching new highs with her frankly incredible combination of soft-tinged pop, soul, jazz, and country, and some perfectly suited lyrics that range from plain funny to ironic and acerbic, often in just one song.
Many thought that Webster would have problems matching her previous album, I Know I’m Funny Haha, but she seems to have done it with ease that only completely formed songwriters (and singers with a great voice) can do.
Webster explains the album title: βGoing to the symphony was almost like therapy for me,β she says. βI was quite literally underdressed at the symphony because I would just decide at the last moment that that’s what I wanted to do. I got to leave what I felt like was kind of a shitty time in my life and be in this different world for a minute. I liked that I didnβt feel like I belonged.β
Don’t know about the symphony, but with this album (and all her previous ones) Webster certainly belongs somewhere close to the top of modern music.
