SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS – AMERICAN BAND (DELUXE)

Drive-By Truckers

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS
AMERICAN BAND (DELUXE)
ATO RECORDS

Some albums (great or not so great) get deluxe, special, or whatever kind of reissue for a reason, or no reason at all. Usually it is an anniversary, ‘high demand’ as PR people like to say. Whatever the case, quite of those you don’t really want or need, yet some are quite timely, have a good reason behind them, and, most of all you most probably need them.

Add to the latter category the current, deluxe reissue of Drive-By Truckers 2016 album American Band. No anniversary here, but the title and the song content should be the cue – they have decided to reissue this album as a precursor to the U.S. presidential election set for November 5, 2024.

So, a good, timely reason stands behind this deluxe reissue, the deluxe part being seven previously unreleased tracks, updated liner notes and new cover art, that is a story in itself.

And the content? Well, you probably won’t be able to find a bad, patchy or even average album by this truly incredible band, and the 2016 original matches the band’s excellent standard, musically, lyrically, whichever way you take it.

As Drive-By Truckers live shows almost always match the high quality of their albums the seven live tracks fit perfectly with the original album, making this one a must.
