Danko Jones
Electric Sounds
Sonic Unyon
Canadian rockers Danko Jones are back at it again with their latest album, Electric Sounds. Unfortunately, the album does not live up to their older stuff. There are worse rock records out there, but I was expecting more from Danko Jones.
βSheβs My Babyβ is easily the best song from the album. From start to finish, it is silly and fun and features an over-the-top call-and-answer chorus that is super infectious. Another highlight is βGood Timeβ. The chorus goes hard, the drums are aggressive, and it has the best vocals from the album. Besides these two tracks there is not much else to like about Electric Sounds.
Over the past two decades, Danko Jones has made a name for themselves, creating songs about rocking hard. With Electric Sounds, the formula stays the same but with a much different result. Very few tracks have the same adrenaline, swagger, electricity, or unbelievably catchy choruses. βGuess Whoβs Backβ starts quite strong with its 2000s-inspired opening but ends up underwhelming. βEye For An Eyeβ has a decent chorus but has nothing else to offer and becomes forgettable. Based on the title, it seemed like the βElectric Soundsβ would have been an intoxicating, hammering, fast-paced arena rock song. Sadly, it is a major disappointment as it lacks excitement and is not very headbang-worthy. It is upsetting that the majority of songs from Electric Sounds are not a rocking good time.
The guitar riffs lack the explosive, badass, loud, and gritty energy that makes Danko Jones enjoyable and entertaining. Lyrically, Danko Jones has never been that complex and, at times can be cringey, but their awesome riffs more than make up for that. The riffs in Electric Sounds end up being super generic and uninteresting. For example, βShake Your Cityβ and βStiff Competitionβ have decent riffs, but nothing is very noteworthy about either of them.
Overall, Electric Sounds is one of the biggest letdowns in rock this year.
