Neither NYC singer-songwriter Clara Joy nor Kramer, the man behind Shimmy-Disc are newbies on the music scene (Kramer quite a bit longer), and it might have taken them time to cooperate, but on What We Have Now, Joy’s latest release it turns out that what they do have is an excellent combination that works.

Kramer always had a knack for finding brilliant talent, from his quite successful combination with actress Ann Magnuson that was Bongwater to bringing to light such great acts that were (or still are) Mazzy Star and Low, to name just a few. And what joy comes up with on her latest just might be quite a balanced cross between Bongwater and Mazzy Star, as her songwriting brings in psych folk touches of Mazzy Star, and her voice has similar timbre as Magnuson. Yet there is enough of her own personality there, both in songwriting and lyrics to make her music on this album simply stand out.
