SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CALEB NICHOLS – RAMON

Caleb Nichols

Caleb Nichols
Ramon
Kill Rock Stars

When the album starts with a song titled “Listen to The Beatles,” you can be sure which way things are going, at least, musically. And Caleb Nichols, a musician, writer, poet, and librarian California, certainly goes that way musically on his latest album Ramon.

Yet, both lyrically and as the whole concept, Nichols takes a different path. You see, Nichols presents, as he puts it, “the tragic story” of Mean Mr. Mustard as a queer icon.

But Nichols’ Ramon is not just an album oriented or to be enjoyed by any specific community. It is an album filled with some incredible music that certainly builds on Nichols’ love of The Beatles and all things melodic and he presents his lyrical concept in a literate and emotional manner that anybody can relate to.

Essentially, Ramon is a true musical achievement that deserves wider attention.
