Avi Kaplan
Floating On A Dream
Fantasy Records

One thing singer-songwriters can impress their potential audience with is their vocals. It can be any specific characteristic, from striking to weird, as long as it draws attention to their music and lyrics.
California singer-songwriter Avi Kaplan has such a striking voice, which he employs to the best effect on his debut solo album ‘Floating On A Dream.’ It does exactly what it is supposed to do underline both the quality of Kaplan’s songwriting, which is rooted in his fascination with all themes Western.
Yet, Kaplan is not a songwriter who just sticks to the original concepts of (country and) western music, he sets his compositions in a modern context of what roots/Americana music is at the moment, with that Western thematic stream flowing as an undercurrent.
The quality of Kaplan’s songwriting and vocals are wrapped in an excellent musical setting and exemplary production by Shooter Jennings, somebody who knows exactly how to accentuate the best in Kaplan’s music and delivery.
And it all works oh so well on Floating On A Dream, a feeling quite a few listeners will experience listening to this album.
