MEDUSA QUARTET – WEAVING GOLD IN BROKEN PLACES
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE ALBUM PREMIERE
It is said that pottery mended with the Japanese art of Kintsugi is stronger than before it was broken. This practice, which uses gold to repair and reconnect lost pieces, is the inspiration for Medusa Quartet’s first full-length album. In it, these four folk innovators weave a tapestry of original music and traditional tunes from around the world, each with their own story. Performed on some of the rarest instruments in the world, the band invites listeners to reimagine what a string quartet can be. You’ll hear songs from a woman of the Ottoman harem, an African-American escaping slavery, and an Irish maid who became the first person burned at the stake for witchcraft. You’ll also hear original tunes that tell personal stories of the four members’ lives – stories of community, family, and connection. You might also hear a little nod to Sibelius’s 5th Symphony in the middle of a fiddle tune. See if you can catch it…
ARTIST QUOTE
“With our first full-length album we want to take people on a journey – both around the world, but also through the process of breaking and healing,” says Medusa Quartet. “The reason Kintsugi inspires us is because it doesn’t cover up the cracks, it uses them to build a stronger container. In Medusa, we don’t shy away from our cracks either – we see them as beautiful.”
