Prairie Cat, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Cary Pratt, announces his new album Face in Granite, arriving November 20, 2026. Here is the first glimpse of the record with “Apple Trees,” an indie alternative folk-rock song about growth, memory, home, and the things we leave behind.

There’s a particular kind of change that comes with leaving the place that made you. On “Apple Trees,” Prairie Cat traces the distance from the orchards of his youth to city streets and adulthood, looking back at the choices, relationships and small necessities that accumulate into a life.

Pratt shares, “Early in writing this record, something changed. I stopped hiding behind humour and let myself write plainly about being a human; about life, family, and loss”. “Apple Trees” is made entirely from true statements — everything said is both true of my life and my father’s. Ultimately it became a love letter to my late mother, a subject I’ve never written about, but is obviously a defining theme in my life.”

“I was born in the apple trees / On a lake with a summer breeze,” Pratt sings at the song’s outset. What follows unfolds almost like a compressed life story: school gives way to working nights at a bakery, finding love, and a calling to a bigger city. “Apple Trees” ultimately sits with the realization that growing up can mean carrying several versions of home with you at once.

That tension is reflected in the song’s accompanying video, which places Prairie Cat back among orchard rows and working agricultural spaces. Against the muted, natural landscape, the imagery feels like a presentation of memory and that the places we come from remain even as our relationship to them changes.

Pratt adds, “Where do you go when what you’re moving from is yourself? I came home after many years to make this video. We layered found footage of city life with images of orchards, letting two lives and two places drift in and out of each other. It’s meant to feel a little lost — like memory, like home, like not knowing where you’re going.

This video and song is a time capsule for future me: so someday, far from where I began, I can remember the feeling of fall, the smell of home, and where I came from. I hope anyone who has ever left something behind to grow can find a piece of themselves in it.”
