Hawksley Workman’s newest release, the six-song EP Fly Like An Ego, is a continuation of the wonderfully creative and eclectic world of Hawksley Workman. Produced by Workman’s frequent collaborator and friend Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, Fur Trade), Fly Like An Ego demonstrates some elements of their music project Mounties, along with apparent influences from others including The Flaming Lips as the track “Rock Properly” could very easily slide into the legendary album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.

As the title would suggest, Fly Like An Ego is very much an album of optimism. Song titles such as “Save My Life” and “Love To Love Life”, and the overall lyrical message is very life-affirming. An excerpt from the track “Human”;

“If life is just an opinion, then get to it/
Be the writer of the work, don’t review it /
When the darkness settles in, you’ll get through it/
Angels wrestle with devils, just to prove it./”

demonstrates the outlook of a writer who seems to have reached a pinnacle of re-evaluation, reflection and appreciation.

Workman’s talent of inducing danceable, beat-driven, ‘80s pop inspired synth indie rock continues with Fly Like An Ego. His unabashed penchant for creating incredibly catchy hooks and memorable, emotionally driven and sometimes weird lyrics is on full display throughout.

Fly Like An Ego is just a snippet of Workman’s greatness, as it seemingly ends as quickly as it begins, clocking in at an economical 19 minutes. Hawksley Workman hasn’t released a solo long play album since 2020’s excellent Less Rage More Tears, with Fly Like An Ego potentially setting the stage for a proper full-length album release.
