When you consciously or subconsciously pick up inspiration from other artists the fact that you did that doesn’t matter – what does is whether you picked up the right things, used them in the right way and injected a dose of your own personality into the proceedings.

So, yes, Weaving (first name Derek), is inspired by quite a number of right influences on his new album Webs – he picks up on Willie Nelson’s 50s and 60s roots, follows the tongue-in-cheek thread John Prine did so well and adds his own perspective on the proceedings without really caring whether his songs would be considered Americana or baroque pop.

Of course, such an all over the place concept can be quite a double-edged sword, but Weaving effectively escapes all the possible sharp edges and weaves his webs quite intricately to say the least, coming up with some subdued gems here. It is experimental folk-pop at its most intricate.
