With the release of his latest album, the electronic music artist apaull continues his steady drop of thought provoking, dance-inspired creations. For those who are aware of apaull’s work, Homogeny will have a familiar ring. With its creatively assembled grooves, collections of sound, and clever snippets of spoken word, the album contains variety enough to hold the listener’s interest through an album-length project.

apaull often builds his projects around over-arching themes. With Homogeny, the artist regards the depiction of little grey aliens as ‘humanity’s devolved state’, as he considers what our future might hold. With the sounds that unfold, it is interesting to listen to apaull explore this idea.

The lead-off track, “Anti-Science”, starts simply, but sneaks up on the ears with its music and message. The production builds musically, and includes spoken commentary about the truckers’ convoy occupation, and those who feel that opinions and beliefs trump scientific fact. There are other notable tracks, such as “Truthahn”, with its futuristic production line groove, and the bright “Alphabet Loop”, which includes some varied movements and a jazzy flute sample. Despite the bleak futurism that may have inspired this work, some of these songs have a decidedly calming effect.

Overall, Homogeny is a little samey in terms of its resemblance to apaull’s past efforts. This is understandable, as the artist plays to a specific audience, where dance grooves are where it’s at. While it might sound like sacrilege to the electronic music crowd, it could be refreshing to hear some different—maybe natural—instrumentation on the occasional track. Perhaps this is conversation for another time. All of this said, it is truly easy to get pulled into apaull’s grooves and, as a side product, his world view. Give this album a spin.
