SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: ARKELLS – LAUNDRY PILE

Laundry Pile is the latest record from the beloved Canadian band Arkells. It is quite different compared to the majority of their discography. Arkells are known for their energetic, groovy, lively, exuberant, and thrilling songs. However, with their latest album, they take a new direction as this release is more subdued, introspective, soft, and folk-driven.

The songwriting on the album might be their best to date. With a tremendous amount of wisdom and honesty, they tackle such topics as heartbreak, love, regret, the future, and the messy parts of life. Highlighting these themes resonate nicely on “Life Is” and “Tango Waltz”, the latter of which reminds one of a more romantic fan-favourite “11:11”. It is incredibly heartwarming and touching and does a fantastic job of capturing the happiness of falling in love.

Anthony Carone really shines on the keys and piano. The bright, soaring, vibrant, 80s feel of the keys of “Skin” combined with the infectious chorus and Max Kerman’s passionate vocals will put a huge smile on your face and make it an instant crowd favourite.

“Beginner’s Mind” is one of the standout tracks from the album. It has an excellent piano riff reminiscent of “Cold As Ice” by Foreigner. The chorus is super catchy and is impossible not to sing along to. It also has a terrific horn section near the end of the song.

The guitars were not as memorable on this album, but there were some interesting parts, most notably the bluesy swamp rock style riff from “Shot In The Dark”.

Overall, Laundry Pile is another solid effort by Arkells.
