Fighting Chance!
Fighting Chance!
Independent
Is the world ready for a 1990s power punk revival? For James and Joe Flanagan, the answer would be a resounding βYes!β. The brothers, who are founders of Toronto indie band Fighting Chance!, have just released their eponymous debut EP.
At first listen, this release might be easy to dismiss, with its derivative sound. But βderivativeβ is exactly the point. The nostalgic 90s sounds on this recording, evoking the likes of Weezer and Nada Surf, are the reason the Flanagan brothers created this project. The music seems to be part tribute, part homage, and maybe a hint of parody. This EP has all of the elements of a great debut recording. Instruments and vocals are well-balanced, and the arrangements are solid and tight.
Also, these are simply good songs.
The lead-off track, βCauliflowerβ begins with a simple guitar figure, joined by a steady drum beat, and a vocal that slips with ease between baritone and tenor ranges. This song builds beautifully, and contains enough surprises to keep the listener interested, wondering what might come next. Indeed, the idea of musical variety and sonic surprises apply to the entire EP. There is so much energy and fun on this recording, one can only imagine how great a Fighting Chance! live show would be.
In paying respect to their 1990s heroes, Fighting Chance! have created a springboard for a their brand of college rock. The music goes beyond nostalgia, though. As a unit, Fighting Chance! possess the musicianship, writing, arranging and production skills to carve out a style all their own. With such a strong debut outing, it will be truly interesting to hear how the band extends their creativity on subsequent releases. The future is looking bright!
