Chicago’s Doom Flower floats and exists between genres and sounds, and latest album Limestone Ritual is a true showcase on how to really do it and make good music at the same time.

You got more or less a crux of what you could call ‘slower’ sounds of the 90s, from slow core to folktronica and undefined harmony Americana, exemplified by bands like Kingsbury Manx, to ambient sounds of Labradford.

Yes, it is all there, and somehow it all makes (musical) sense by the way in which Doom Flower presents it. Who knows why that is the case. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that all the members have a long indie rock history, involving bands like Joan of Arc and Brokeback among others, bringing in their previous musical experience, or it could be some kind of synergy among the band members, or something completely different altogether, yet the fact remains that tracks like “The Space”, “Past Tense”, “Telehealth”, or any other on the album work in their seemingly subdued way, but with layers of sounds that only unravel with repeated listens.

An excellent way to start a new year.
