SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: WILL EPSTEIN – WENDY

Will Epstein

Will Epstein
Wendy
Fat Possum Records

A casual listen to Wendy, the new album by Woodstock, NY’s Will Epstein, might make one fall into the trap of labeling this album and Epstein with the standard tag of singer songwriter.

Yet, as the album unveils and its details start slowly cropping up to the surface you realize that the PR descriptions of Epstein are truly correct – he is a wide-ranging composer, who is a sought-after collaborator in the film, dance, music, and art worlds.

Still, this time around, he has chosen pop songs to express his musical vision. And it is a vision that encompasses such a wide spectrum of musical genres which Epstein incorporates in almost minute detail that it is often almost impossible to separate those genres apart. At the same time, Epstein devotes as much detail and care to his lyrics, as they form an integral part of the success of these songs.

It is only through repeated and detailed listening that those elements start to unveil themselves, and at the same time still enabling the listener to enjoy Epstein’s musical constructions, making Wendy quite an essential listen.
