SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DANNY GOO – BUTTERFLIES

Danny Goo

Danny Goo
Butterflies
Atoned Music

For years solo pop-punk-rap artist Danny Goo has perfected the cocktail of mixing both music genres. When entering the scene with his first EP, Danny Goo showed a grasp of writing intimate lyrics while genre-blending soundscapes that clasp all nostalgic pop-punk nuances, classic R&B melodies, emocore, and emo-rap circles. Teaming up with A-list producer Kevin Thrasher (Barker, MGK, Avril Lavigne), Sophomore EP Butterflies takes his authentic style to another level while also pushing his vulnerable lyricism to levels not seen in his previous release.

Butterflies starts with an emotionally engaging experience, “Heart Attack.” Poignant and full of pop-punk yesteryear charisma, it’s a great opener that moves things forward for the next few standout moments.

“Cut My Hair” vocally and lyrically is one of the most infectious heart-rending junctures on Butterflies, furthering the confessional-style narrative of love and loss.

Things slow down with another exploratory and denuded track, “Had To Let You Go.” Powerfully honest and instrumentally uncomplicated, it stands out as the best track on the EP.

Butterflies ends with the title track, blending everything we are used to hearing from the artists, it feels fluid and unforced.

While many can say Butterflies is another EP riding the coattails of the Emocore/emo rap wave. This artist and EP feel nothing like that. This EP feels loose, sincere, and comes from a place that wants to tell a story of love and loss and how one is trying to come to terms with that. Love is messy and complicated at times, and there are times we don’t always get it right. This EP is an undisguised and vulnerable take on that.
