Love & Pain
It Comes In Waves
Independent
Many artists have both many differing (or not so differing) musical interests and try to cover as much ground as they possibly could. Very often, it has quite a bit to do with their inventiveness and imagination.
Seattle-based duo Love & Pain, comprised of Natalia Czajkiewicz (founder of lostteeth) and Brad Clifford (guitar builder and tech for Slipknot, Mastodon, Gaslight Anthem and others) obviously have other musical interests, but when they work together as Love & Pain, they come up with something that tries to stay true to their moniker.
On the It Comes In Waves EP, their fourth joint release, they go for a languid cross between Hope Sandoval and lyrical spikes of Nick Cave (of course, himself not a stranger to something slow-evolving).
Yet, throughout the five tracks here, Czajkiewicz and Clifford combine the slow, you could call it ‘loving’ part and Czajkiewicz ‘s cool, often haunting vocals with some detailed and building guitar work from Brad (no wonder guitars are his specialty).
Well, most (if not all) of us have been in a situation to feel both the pleasure (and pain) love brings with it, and Love & Pain depict both quite vividly on It Comes In Waves. And it certainly does.
