SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DOPE LEMON – ROSE PINK CADILLAC

Three years after the release of Smooth Big Cat, Australian native Angus Stone is back with Dope Lemon’s Rose Pink Cadillac. Dope Lemon is the indie folk solo project started by Stone in 2016 where he saw success with the hit single “Marinade”. Known for his blend of surf, psych, indie, and funk, Dope Lemon encapsulates the feeling of a nostalgic and hazy summer. This holds true with the third album Rose Pink Cadillac. This LP features lush production filled with guitars drenched in reverb, vocals with a slap back delay, and atmospheric beach soundscapes.

The album opens with the very groovy title track which features a memorable guitar riff and a catchy chorus about falling hopelessly in love. Stone sings in his Bob Dylan-esque voice about the theme of love to mid-tempo instrumentation that is easy to listen to.

“Every Day is a Holiday”, which is technically the first single off the album, is undoubtedly a major highlight of the LP. This track has gorgeous production and an infectious hook and beat. The layered vocal harmonies paired up with trumpets is an emotive combination that fits well.

Besides the singles, Rose Pink Cadillac does fall short of memorable tracks. At times this LP feels long and drawn out especially with the songs “Sailors Delight” and “God’s Machete”. Rose Pink Cadillac is a great album to throw on and groove out to, but with this release, Stone sticks to what he is known for and presents another instalment to the Dope Lemon discography.
