SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: THE DARKNESS – MOTORHEART

The Darkness

The Darkness
Motorheart
Cooking Vinyl

The Darkness have been the go-to band for tongue in cheek glam rock, with the secret being that musically, they are insanely talented and their songs sonically are off the charts. With this in mind, Motorheart does not disappoint. On the contrary, it grows the legend of The Darkness as the funny band that kills both live and on their records.

Motorheart begins with an ode to Glasgow, “Welcome Tae Glasgae”. It will be a sing-along tour staple, with brash guitars and a second riff, which is super heavy even for glam metal standards. Another standout, “Motorheart”, explores the ridiculous concept of falling in love with a giant robot. It is all parts ELO and has a very Rush vibe. Here the band is expanding to almost a prog rock sound and it is refreshing take for them.

One would think “Jussy’s Girl” would be a play on the Rick Springfield classic but it surely is not. It is about loving someone who does not love you back but the comparisons end there. The hooks and acoustic guitar work are fantastic. The out of this world falsetto vocals are impressive even by Justin Hawkins standards. The song is flawless and self-effacing while flexing its muscles, a combination The Darkness pulls off constantly on this album.

Motorheart closes with “Speed of the Nite Time”, conjuring up a new trick. It’s 38 Special mixed with Foreigner, and is moody with Pink Floyd female vocals at the tail end, including a solo that is impossible to play.

This album is a watershed moment that will see The Darkness continue to rock for years to come. One needs to get past the goofy concept and listen to the music, which is unbeatable. One of the top albums of the year.
