Chaz Costello, Bass player for Choir Boy and co leader of Human Leather always has another trick up his sleeve, in particular, Sculpture Club and all of the melancholy pop punk that it brings to the Salt Lake City scene.

On first listen of the new album, Worth, The Cure references abound, mixed with new more artistically-arranged songs. Upon multiple listens, I am getting notes of old REM, The Ocean Blue, Throwing Muses, and many other College Rock legends.

The best song on the album, “Honest Mistake”, is driving and pushing the pop agenda with syncopated lyrics mixed with guitar leads and a Smiths breakdown thrown in there. It is one of my favorite songs this year and is on repeat. “Twirl for Me” is their lead single hit. It is simply beautiful and pulls at your heartstrings. It evokes a sense of loss and regret. It is a perfect pop song.

Sculpture Club has chosen to go in a softer direction on this album, leaving some angst behind. This is a sign of musical maturity or a different direction for them post Chaz’s massive success with Choir Boy. Regardless it is nice to hear such a refreshing new take on an older style.

“Just One More” is their set closer. It has a smoldering build-up that kicks in and goes running free. It is their powerhouse song with feedback ringing in your ears and powerful drums. Sculpture Club stands on their own and is not just a side project for Chaz. If it is, you could not tell. His writing talent mixed with spot on arrangements make this a must pick up album.
