SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: MINES FALLS – MINES FALLS

Mines Falls
Independent

Saying that something sounds ‘cinematic’ can mean 1001 things to 1001 different people. Still, most would agree, that a rock sound that leads a line from the melodic side of Pink Floyd to Elbow and Radiohead these days can certainly fall into this category.

In that respect, based on their self-titled debut album, the L.A. brothers duo, Mines Falls, can fall into that category on two levels. First of all, Carson and Eric Lund’s day job is working on film and design. Secondly, intentionally or unintentionally (probably both), their sound certainly continues that Pink Floyd/Radiohead/Elbow line of ‘cinematic’ sound.

Of course, if you line up with a certain sound, blindly following someone else’s example can turn into a copycat disaster.  Luckily for all those who’ll take a listen to the brotherly duo, they have assimilated all their influences perfectly to come up with something that is obviously personal and so easy on the ear. This is particularly evident on the tracks like “Low Moon Rising” and “Hey Mother,” with the rest of the album also leaving a strong impression.

What is evident is that Mines Falls know exactly what they’re doing, mixing their day and night jobs with ease and promising to come up with something even more personal in the future.
