It’s no secret Glenn Danzig is greatly inspired by the pop music of the ‘50s. His new album, Danzig Sings Elvis, is a love letter to the era. The horror punk icon, commonly referred to as “Evil Elvis”, reimagines the swagger and vocal stylings of Elvis with ease.

The original frontman of Misfits pays homage to the King by choosing some lesser-known tracks and some classics. While the tracklisting is not entirely accessible to casual Elvis fans looking for renditions of all the big hits, a couple of tracks are familiar. Standout track is the chillingly groovy cover of “Fever” accompanied only by bass and sparing percussion.

Clear, crooning vocals are accompanied by pared-down instrumentation, which showcases Danzig’s impressive vocal range and ability to hit those signature baritone notes. Gently distorted guitar meets light drumming and gentle keys.

Danzig Sings Elvis is a remarkably delicate addition to a punk and metal repertoire that has historically featured a hefty dose of darkness.
