SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: PORCHES – RICKY MUSIC

Porches

Porches
Ricky Music
Domino

Porches, the recording project of Aaron Maine, has released Ricky Music, a followup to the 2018 album, The House. The album features new production techniques, experimentation, and the addition of a more atmospheric sound, all the while teaming up with other artists, including Zsela, Dev Hynes, Peter Maine, and more.

“Patience” is filled with simple piano chords and clean vocals. The song is a two-and-a-half-minute journey in a smooth, unassuming love song that quickly transforms into an industrial synth pop song as it takes off. The end brings it back to its original style, simple finger style guitar and heavy vocals.

“PFB” is notably unique. The track is somewhat chaotic, messy, and hectic to say the least, with its gimmicky off-notes. It only runs 33 seconds, any longer and listeners might be a bit more confused than when they started. It is so frenzied that it only starts to make sense after your fourth or fifth play-through.

The final track of the album, “rangerover”, is a bonus track. Upon first listen, it sounds like a very typical indie-pop song, but as the song progresses, one can begin to hear the ‘80s influences.

Ricky Music is vocally-focused, with sweet guitar melodies and a hint of synths. The release features heavy drums that can sometimes distract listeners. It is a mix of perfectly curated slow and fast songs. At times, clueless wandering through a space-synth journey of melodies and chaos is the best way to describe this release. Although it can feel a bit shoe-gazey at times, the songs always manage to resolve in a pleasing manner. Ricky Music isn’t your typical indie rock release and will please those fans who want to experience a unique take on the genre.
