DOOMSQUAD
Let Yourself Be Seen
Bella Union
The sibling trio, DOOMSQUAD, brings spirituality and political change to the forefront on their new album Let Yourself Be Seen. Layered with influences of jazz, acid house, and NY disco, Let Yourself Be Seenwas made purposefully for empowerment and bringing music back to the body.
The limitless talent amongst the siblings allows for an album that can successfully execute sound experimentation while still asserting their many messages. For the seasoned fan, this is an amazing feat, but could be considered disjointed for new listeners. The disjointedness of the album mirrors the spirit, untied to one feeling, often moving towards what feels rightβ¦ so DOOMSQUAD just might be onto something. The soft interludes βSpandrelβ and βSpandrel IIβ are perfect transitions, almost like the calm before the storm as we are thrown into the disco that is βGeneral Hum.β The single declares the intent of the album: expression of the spirit.
βLet It Goβ challenges social change over an up-tempo techno beat that heightens as the questioning intensifies. The sound, as well as the genre experimentation,do the album justice β no pun intended, as DOOMSQUAD can effortlessly tackle socio-political issues in a thematic way. The NY house musicstyle is genius in βDorianβs Closet,β a salute to legendary drag queen Dorian Corey and to New York ball culture.
The album is filled with distant elements that come together in a cathartic manner, allowing for release of frustration, passion, and expression through the spirit of the body. Let Yourself Be Seen is overall a decent album with clear intent.
