SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SVIN – VIRGIN CUTS

SVIN
Virgin Cuts
Momeatdadrecords

From a Scandinavian record player in the middle of Copenhagen, this record reaches out to you.

In the same furious manner as Pardans comes another avant garde rock band from Copenhagen called SVIN. SVIN is the Danish word for ‘pig’, but it can also mean ‘bastard’ or ‘wretch’. They are an extremely powerful quartet, and with their latest album Virgin Cuts they are improvising more than ever before. It’s a grueling experience to listen to this album. It enters your body and wipes the white off your bones. Something evil and mean is resting right out in the periphery of the music, threatening to throw itself straight down into the grave if it wasn’t for the musical nonchalance and surplus present within the project. Like a huge monstrously faltering tower, it stands in the middle of all the neat and harmless music of today. SVIN dares to go all the way. On their previous releases, there was a cold and icy feeling which is replaced on Virgin Cuts with an organic and fierce feeling that leads one’s thoughts to Beelzebub and Purgatory. Henrik Pultz Melbye, Lars Bech Pilgaard and Thomas Eiler have, with a select few guest musicians, made an improvised and wild work of high carat levels.
