SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: LORDS OF ACID – PRETTY IN KINK

Lords Of Acid

Lords Of Acid
Pretty In Kink
Metropolis Records

Lords of Acid, the Belgian American techno gods who have long reigned over the dance floor with their raunchy and outrageously dirty and sex-driven lyrics are at it again with their latest album Pretty in Kink. This 12-track selection delivers songs destined for dance floor greatness as well as down-tempo more melodic offerings that are sure to get you in the mood.

Lead by Praga Khan, a pioneer in the rave and hardcore dance scene, Lords of Acid have been a staple in the electronic dance scene since their debut in 1988. With what they’re serving up with Pretty in Kink, it’s clear that Lords of Acid plan on maintaining their reign for years to come. Songs like “So Goddamn Good”, “Before the Night is Over” and “My Demons are Inside” are clear hits for me with distinctive synthesized beats reminiscent of late ‘80s and ‘90s dance floor anthems that I can’t wait to hear in a club. In particular “My Demons are Inside”, which is a track that greatly reminds me of the theme from Mortal Kombat, a movie franchise that Praga Khan also happened to have done an album for.

On that down-tempo note are tracks like “Androgyny”, “Ma Fille de Joie” and “Goldfinger”. I particularly love “Ma Fille de Joie” — which translates to ‘Prostitute’– a deeply and darkly sensual track in both French and English lyrics that is sure to send your mind for a trip when listening with headphones. I expected “Goldfinger” to sample from the classic theme from James Bond but, alas, it does not but rather it borrows the familiar melody from that iconic tune with similar bombastic vocals and, of course, far more sensual lyrics.

You can’t listen to Pretty in Kink and not take notice of tracks like “Sex Cam Girl and “What the Fuck!” which boasts some of the far more sexually aggressive and explicit lyrics on the album. Paired with seriously infectious bass lines – in particular “What the Fuck!” – with lyrics that are meant to grab attention, these tracks are sure to cause a scene.

Lords of Acid have done it again with Pretty in Kink, an album that will turn heads, get people in the mood, and make them want to dance. This album proves that they clearly know what drives their audience and what has kept them going for the past three decades.
