Sound is a palpable thing, and has the capability of jarring emotions from us at a moment’s notice – a powerful display of energy animating clay long after it dissolves from reality. Music can in fact give insight to the future if one were to watch and listen. The entire process is quite magical and continues to be enjoyed no matter how it is spun. Bands know this to be true which is why they are able to manipulate the orchestral landscape. The Babies sophomore release is no different, a record featuring hushed dirges, melancholic traveling odes and squealing rave-ups brought together by Kevin Morby’s and Cassie Ramone’s skilled songwriting.

“Alligator” snaps its lower mandible the way Lou Reed once did with dispassionate lyrics before a graceful turn. Organs, pianos, saxophones and strings play a role in this aural atmosphere, creating something sweet The Babies can call their own. It all began as a side project which then grew into something more, as the band toured most of the year. “Mess Me Around” shows the aftermath of an unfortunate encounter while “Get Lost” questions lust leading into “See The Country” and its careless jaunt. Our House on the Hill is a slice of musical satisfaction, one that speaks the language of Rock ‘n’ Roll while offering something for everyone. The journey has but started for these Brooklyn natives who look not to stop anytime soon.
