Vibrissae – “Need”
A Spill Exclusive Music Premiere
Portland, Oregon-based electronic/shoegaze trio Vibrissae premieres its lead single “Need”, off of upcoming debut album Somewhere Away, which comes out August 19th via the European label Vipchoyo Sound Factory.
Band members Imber Lingard (vocals on Somewhere Away), Emma Bell and Aaron Bell (various instruments), and Sandi Leeper (vocals for live performances) specialize in a multi-genre approach to their music, combining or alternating elements from electronic rock, synth-pop, post-rock, and shoegaze styles of music.
The electrifying post-punk number “Need” represents an outstanding sonic detour for Vibrissae, churning with restless agitation and a darker atmosphere. A furious frisson of guitar distortion erupts at the start of the track and attacks sporadically throughout the tune. Between the guitar-driven tumult lies tense, deceptively tranquil moments, where a supple bass line, warped guitar chime, cymbal and drum strikes exist in the calm before the storm. Lingard sing-talks in a stark tone, building up to a hypnotic chant on the chorus as she forebodingly declares, “This is what you want / This is what you need.”
“Need” is a rich, striking, distortion-filled single that breaks down the door into Vibrissae’s captivating and varied world on the Somewhere Away LP.
