SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: EVA X – TURBOPINK

Eva X

EVA X
TURBOPINK
DISTORTION PRODUCTIONS

Eva X released her debut album in 2022 (I Dream of a Reality), which firmly established her in the world of electronica and EDM music. She is back with the wonderfully titled TURBOPINK, and while not an entirely new sound, she has certainly grown from her debut and has created some new sounds. During the last few years, Eva X has toured, performed extensively, and has been writing and putting together songs for this album. With TURBOPINK, Eva X is a bit heavier and a bit edgier, but she always has an incredible melody and a dance beat that certainly will pack any floor.

Eva X’s music could be described as EDM or electronica but with TURBOPINK she incorporates some industrial, metal, and even a little bit of J-Pop. In other words, anything can happen and does happen on this album. A song, such as “Dopamine Blind,” may start off as electronica but quickly shifts gears for a few minutes of industrial and it works. This is followed by the J-Pop-inspired “Otherside,” which itself quickly morphs into EDM. She is talented at drifting from genre to genre with ease.

She slows things down for the emotional “I Remember M,e, but still incorporates a heavy beat. She even tackles Korn’s “Twisted Transistor” and makes it her own. While it may not be the intense anger (and fear factor) of Korn, she does manage to create an uneasy atmosphere throughout the song and a soundscape one might not want to be coming out of your transistor.

Eva X’s voice is powerful, energetic, sometimes fun (“Fiction,” which has a great 1980s feel) and strong. She writes interesting lyrics and backs it all up with strong melodies. TURBOPINK is also an album that grows on the listener. You do hear something new with every listen. One will dig the album immediately but listen to it a few more times and one gets so much more from repeated listenings. Sophomore albums are always tricky, and they sometimes do not live up to expectations. TURBOPINK surpasses all expectations and it is a brilliant album in its own right.
