STEVEN PAGE SERVES UP A LITTLE HOLIDAY CHEESE WITH NEW SINGLE “CHEESE LOG”
FRESH BAKED GOODS RECORDS
Steven Page is serving up something a little different for the holidays. His new single, “Cheese Log,” out October 28, celebrates one of the holiday buffet table’s most enduring staples while finding humor in the sometimes complicated emotions that come with the season. The song is the first taste of Steven’s Greetings, Page’s new holiday album, arriving November 13 via Fresh Baked Goods.
Inspired by the return to social gatherings after the pandemic lockdowns, “Cheese Log” follows someone who is happy to see friends and family again but finds the prospect of retreating home to make a cheese log equally appealing. What began as an improvised joke during a soundcheck with Page’s longtime collaborators Craig Northey and Kevin Fox eventually became a song that surprised even its creator.
A Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee and co-founder of Barenaked Ladies, Page has spent more than three decades finding humor in unexpected places. That sensibility runs throughout Steven’s Greetings, a ten-song collection of new originals, holiday favorites and fresh interpretations of songs from his own catalog. Every track is newly recorded, including songs Page previously released with Barenaked Ladies, such as “Hanukkah Blessings” and “Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind.” Recorded primarily with Northey on guitar and Fox on cello, the album also features appearances by Page’s three sons, Isaac, Ben and Jonah.
ARTIST QUOTE
“Although this song started as a bit of a joke, improvised to make Kevin and Craig laugh at a soundcheck, it ended up being the kind of song I’m most proud of,” Page says, “one that can sometimes choke me up with its mix of pathos and silliness in a way that only one of those two qualities can sometimes miss on their own.”
