WREN + WILDE – “GITCHI GAMI”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
“This song unfolds from a Southern gothic ballad into a sweeping ’70s-inspired jam ballad dedicated to Lake Superior. Soaring harmonies and roots-grounded instrumentation paint a vivid picture of Minnesota’s North Shore.”
Minnesota folk band Wren + Wilde explores the tension between heartache and hope on its debut album, Serial Dreamers. Drawing inspiration from the complexities of love, parenthood and identity singer-songwriter Hilary Yoder leads the band with unflinching honesty and heartland soul.
Yoder describes the band’s signature sound as “smoke folk” —a mix of Southern gothic, vintage country, and Laurel Canyon-era rock. With echoes of The Civil Wars, Fleetwood Mac, and Emmylou Harris & The Hot Band, Wren + Wilde blends haunting harmonies with a gritty flavor of Americana, crafting songs that smolder with equal parts fire and feeling.
Across 12 resonant songs, Serial Dreamers reflects on the bittersweet hope that carries us through life’s uncertainties. From the title track’s celebration of chronic believers to more tender meditations on change and regret, a spirit of resilience runs through the album. The project also marks Yoder’s return to releasing music after stepping away from the industry for nearly a decade to raise a family.
Produced by Christopher Furst, Serial Dreamers expands Wren + Wilde’s folk roots into a rich, cinematic sound. Organic instrumentation and layered textures give the record a warmth and depth that feels expansive while remaining true to Yoder’s intimate songwriting. At its heart, Serial Dreamers is a record about finding your way back—to yourself, to the people you love, and to the dreams that keep calling you home.
ARTIST QUOTE
“I’m a Minnesota girl – born and raised – and the north shore of Lake Superior is my absolute favorite place on earth. We get up there as often as we can with our 1984 Jayco pop-up camper (she’s real fancy) and spend our days cozied up on her shores soaking in the beauty. There’s something about the lake – the sheer vastness of it – the rugged sawtooth mountains framing her in – that quiets the noise in my head and brings me into the present. And when it’s time to leave, I feel an unmistakable ache. It’s a strange kind of homesickness. I feel her absence immediately and that ache follows me home. “Gitchi Gami” (which is the Ojibwa name for Lake Superior) is steeped in that longing—a love letter to the saltless sea that has got a hold on my heart.” ~Hilary Yoder
