Let’s face it, at some point, dark times deserve dark music. You may try to escape it, but they stare at our faces, and we have to do something about it. One way is to create some equally dark music that might give us the answers how to cope with them.

That seems to be the concept Calgary’s Stephen James Moore, aka Post Death Soundtrack, has taken on with his quite hefty trilogy of albums, of which Barren Mother of All is the third part.

Oh, when we say hefty, the first two parts, Grist and In All My Nightmares I Am Alone, we have in mind that these two were 30+ plus each double albums, while Barren Mother of All is a 40-song triple album, making everything quite a heavy dose of darkness to take on.

At the same time, the music itself covers all aspects of dark music from gothic and industrial to all sounds noir, as the selection of covers includes songs by PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, The Doors, and Rage Against the Machine, as well as Beastie Boys.

It could have been a mess, but there is quite a seamless thread going through here, making the guiding concept that consciousness is only a concept, albeit a dark one.
