If you have ever wondered what happens when two guitarists from two different prog-rock bands, both with a prog history in their solo careers, come together to record an album, then wonder no more. The Roaring Waves is an incredible album from Steve Hackett (one time guitarist for Genesis but solo since 1977) and Steve Rothery (guitarist for Marillion, who has also carved out his own distinct solo career) have joined forces for a thematic album that says a great deal without words.

The instrumental album takes the listener on a journey, by boat, through many stories and emotions. It appears to be a very personal album for both artists. Each song represents a different ‘story’ and each song has a different style. This is not all prog rock, although prog is certainly the foundation. For example, the title track, “The Roaring Waves” has quasi-Spanish acoustic guitar to introduce the song, and it builds, much like a boat journey which starts in calm water and is later tossed about by the waves. As the electric guitars and percussion/drumming come in, the story does come together in one’s mind/imagination.

Other songs make use of synthesizers, such as the incredible, and interesting “Red Dragon,” while elsewhere the music becomes almost ambient (“K-129”), while elsewhere the Hackett gets out his harmonica for what sounds like a fun jam between the two. But underlying the entire album is the extreme beauty of the songs. As one drifts from song to song, the overall beauty of the music is breathtaking.

The Roaring Waves is an absolutely brilliant album. The two artists have created music that embraces the listener and takes them along for the ride. It ebbs and flows and is constantly moving, both musically and in terms of styles/genres. It is a remarkable achievement and an album that is surely going to be enjoyed by fans of both artists. There are surprises throughout and with each spin on the turntable, one discovers something new. Apparently, it is a one-off, which if true, would be a shame. The duo has created something outstanding with The Roaring Waves.
