Seven years since his previous album, Jonny Couch returns with “Where The Sidewalk Ends”, a confident and engaging collection that builds on the melodic power pop foundations of his earlier releases while pushing his sound into richer, crisper territory. Drawing inspiration from the golden age of late-’70s and early-’80s new wave and guitar pop, the album blends jangling guitars, shimmering synths and irresistible hooks with thoughtful songwriting that values substance as much as immediacy. Fans of Matthew Sweet, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and Cheap Trick will feel at home with Couch delivering songs that feel timeless.

Inspired by a 1950 film noir, this record carries an understated sense of mystery throughout. The songs unfold like late-night reflections, following characters searching for connection, clarity and redemption against a backdrop of lonely streets and emotional uncertainty. That cinematic thread gives the record a strong narrative identity, while the balance between energetic rockers and more reflective moments keeps the ten-song collection engaging from beginning to end. Whether leaning into bright power pop or sleek new wave textures, Couch never loses sight of what matters most: memorable melodies and honest storytelling.

One of the album’s greatest strengths is its ambitious production concept, as Couch enlisted four collaborators, each bringing their differing signatures and perspectives. Jonas Wilson (The Black Angels, Heartless Bastards, Urban Heat), Peter Mavrogeorgis (The National, Sharon Van Etten, Boy Harsher), Jon Chinn (Wild Child, Lomelda, David Ramirez) and Dan Haag (The Astrojet, The Black Swans) each leave their imprint without distracting from Couch’s songwriting, resulting in a remarkably cohesive sound.

With Jonny Couch on vocals, drums and synths throughout, accompanied by Jonas Wilson (guitars, bass, additional synths), this album features contributions from Jim Kaznosky, Jody Porter, Pat Lally, Supremo Massiv, Jon Chinn, Peter Mavrogeorgis and Dan Haag. Together, they create a rich musical backdrop that enhances every song while allowing Couch’s songwriting to remain firmly at the centre of the experience.

Couch is a songwriter who has grown in confidence without sacrificing accessibility. Every arrangement serves the song, every chorus feels earned, and there is an effortless flow between upbeat anthems and more intimate moments. Tracks such as “Overwhelmed” and the title cut showcase Couch’s ability to combine emotional honesty with polished, radio-friendly songwriting, while touches of disco-inspired synths and classic new wave textures broaden the album’s sonic palette without ever overwhelming its rock-and-roll heart.

Visually, “Where The Sidewalk Ends” is just as thoughtfully realised. Anne Muntges’ striking cover artwork perfectly complements the album’s noir-inspired atmosphere, while the title-track video extends its cinematic themes. Together, the music and visuals present a cohesive artistic statement that reflects the care and ambition invested throughout the project, making the album feel like far more than simply another collection of songs.

Seven years may be a long time between albums, but the wait has clearly paid off. Couch has delivered a polished, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable record that deserves the attention of both longtime followers and newcomers alike.
