SHAMUS – “SORCERESS”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
What do Homer’s Odyssey and a musician’s life on the road have in common? For SHAMUS, aka Shamus Currie — multi-instrumentalist and longtime member of Canadian rock institution The Sheepdogs — they are the same story told in different centuries. His second solo album, The Seven Seas, arrives June 26, 2026 via Right On Records: a thirteen-track rock concept record that maps the emotional architecture of one of Western literature’s foundational epics onto original songs about touring, longing, and the long way home. To be released on both vinyl and digital platforms, the album is available for pre-order now.
The album arrives weeks before Christopher Nolan’s long-anticipated film adaptation of The Odyssey hits theatres July 17 — and not long after a new generation of readers discovered Homer through Emily Wilson’s acclaimed translation. The Seven Seas joins that cultural conversation from an unexpected angle: a touring musician who found that the ancient epic wasn’t mythology at all, but a mirror.
“I love the old adventure stories and I’ve been a touring musician most of my adult life, so I’ve come to view the Odyssey as a metaphor for life on tour. Every day you’re exploring a new land, every night you play a show and conquer a new city. Your crew is your band and your ship is the van. You must navigate storms and sirens, cruel twists of fate and vengeful or indifferent gods. And as long tours stretch on and on until your endurance and sanity are tested — you pine for your home and a sweet Penelope waiting for you on a distant shore.” says Currie
The Seven Seas maps Homer’s epic onto 13 original rock compositions and explores the emotional terrain of life away from home — from the giddy thrill of new adventure to the loneliness and mental toll of constant travel. “This record is for anyone who has travelled for work or spent significant time away from home and loved ones,” says Currie.
The record showcases a dimension of Currie’s musicianship distinct from his work with The Sheepdogs: richer in atmosphere, more cinematic in scope, and deeply personal. Keyboards, horn, and guitar — his signature tools in the band — take on new roles here, anchoring the record’s mythological weight without sacrificing the raw energy of classic rock.
The Seven Seas follows Currie’s 2023 debut solo album The Shepherd and the Wolf, another fantasy-themed rock concept record that established SHAMUS as a project with genuine literary ambition.
ARTIST QUOTE
“Sorceress is a spooky jam built around a circuitous, harmonized guitar riff. We layered it with percussion, flute, and as many strange and sibilant textures as we could to get a Dr. John Gris-gris vibe. The spoken word excerpts are taken from the Odyssey, when Odysseus lands at the island of Aeaea and crosses paths with the bewitching Circe, who recites to him a spell for speaking with the dead. The end result is a concoction as heady and potent as a witches brew.” ~Shamus Currie
