CATHERINE BROOKMAN
IF A SONG FADES OUT, IT’S PLAYING FOREVER SOMEWHERE
LONG ECHO RECORDS

Brooklyn-based Catherine Brookman presents herself as a performer and composer, rather than going under the somewhat worn-out term of singer and songwriter, and she has good reasoning behind it, as she comes up with her debut album with an elongated title, If A Song Fades Out, It’s Playing Forever Somewhere.
Simply put, there is very little here that can be tied to a single voice, and Brookman has a great one, and an acoustic instrument. Brookman uses a set of complex song structures which she details in a widespread instrumentation from orchestral touches to electronics, none of which overpowers the other elements present, particularly her vocals and non-linear storytelling.
All of this is so hard to achieve while coming up with music that makes sense, but even though it is her debut, Brookman seems to have no problem in overcoming any possible obstacles and come up with some extremely interesting music.
