CLONE – CARE TO TRY?
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE EP PREMIERE
With the week winding down, what we all need is a proper bang to send us careening into the weekend—luckily, Brooklyn alt-rockers CLONE deliver that whopping sonic event with their new, blazing three-track EP Care To Try?, released by Portland label Little Cloud Records. Following up their impressive debut album CL. 1 album and accompanying 12″ vinyl LP (released last year). Taking the baton from where they left off at that time, they are back with a powerful offering of pure, focused sonic fury.
From the first distorted, driving guitar riff to the final crash of the cymbals, the EP is a galvanizing, redemptive shot of noise that fully encapsulates the band’s raw energy and defiant spirit. Produced by LG Galleon and Martin Bisi (Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Swans) at his famed BC Studio (built with Brian Eno), this album was mastered by the expert hands of Fred Kevorkian (The White Stripes, Sonic Youth, Juliana Hatfield, Lloyd Cole).
Care To Try? doesn’t just ask you to listen; it grabs you by the collar and pulls you into CLONE’s intensely personal sonic world. The title track, in particular, stands as the fiery heart of the EP, dubbed a “retribution song.” It cries out for the disenfranchised, its muscular, propulsive rhythm underpinning a sincere political and emotional plea. The spoken word bridge, with its potent observation—”with all charisma there is scorn, with every swoon another’s heart will stammer slowly in submission”—is a chilling and impactful moment that elevates the track beyond a simple rock anthem.
CLONE is attempting to revive a sound that once profoundly resonated with the isolated and vulnerable, and they’ve succeeded by imbuing this music with transformative power. Care To Try? is more than just a musical release; it’s an incandescent call-to-arms, proving that alt-rock still has the fire and brains to speak for those whose voices are often drowned out. It’s an essential listen for anyone looking for music that’s both intelligent and incendiary.
LG Galleon explains, “These songs were again recorded with the legendary Martin Bisi, who helped bring the determination and drive in the studio to the forefront when recording these songs. A different lineup makes for a novel live experience every time, yet always with incendiary results. The full tour in October should prove a very fruitful experience and we are looking forward to playing these new songs from the EP live.”
The tracks on this EP were written over the past year with Clone’s original lineup of LG Galleon (Dead Leaf Echo), Gregg Giufree (Pilot to Gunner), Max Idas and Dominick Turi. As a live phenomenon, Clone currently includes LG Galleon, Paul Liziragga (Namesake), Alex Cox (The Veldt), and drummers Avery Brooks and Jeremy Duvall. The past few years. Clone has played SXSW and toured with Christian Death, Twin Tribes, Wand, La Witch, Live Skull and The Veldt.
The Care To Try? EP is available everywhere digitally, with two tracks on 7” vinyl. The band will be releasing their next full-length album in 2026. If you’re in the USA, catch them on tour this fall.
